GUAM (PROJECT RECOVER) 2022

MARE accompanied Scripps Institute of Oceanography (Scripps) and the University of Delaware on a 7-day survey from February 28th to March 6th 2022 to support ‘Project Recover’, a collaborative effort to locate and bring home Americans missing in action since World War II. Funded by NOAA and NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration & Research, this survey was focused on finding wreckage sites of United States B-29 bombers that were launched from the airfields of Saipan and Tinian, in the Northern Mariana Islands, most of which were lost shortly after takeoff.

Scripps deployed their autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) from the University of Hawai’i’s R/V Kilo Moana to map areas of interest in high resolution. As new targets were located, MARE deployed the ROV to visually survey these anomalies to determine if they were the sites of lost US aircraft.
