HAWAI’I 30 X 30

Hawai’i 30 x 30

MARE is partnering with Hawai’i using our BATFish to collect information to inform the effective management of their nearshore waters by 2030. We are using our BATFish to help locate deep hotspots of abundance and biodiversity which are hard for divers to access. These areas have rich biodiversity and are home to critical marine ecosystems. Deepwater data captured with our BATFish will help inform Hawaii’s comprehensive, long-term management plan to ensure sustainability and resilience their world-renowned nearshore waters. Our work helps us understand how marine life is reacting and adapting to a changing ocean.  The information we gather will be shared with resource managers – so they have a complete picture of what they are tasked with managing and protecting.

HAWAI’I’S CHALLENGE

Feeling the impact of climate change and increased human activity, one such community, Hawai’i, took action. In 2018, a collaboration of civic and community stakeholders launched the Sustainable Hawai‘i Initiative to effectively manage 30% of their nearshore waters by 2030. Their comprehensive plan addresses many concerns that other Island nations face; their plan could serve as a road map for intervention and recovery. Success in Hawai’i offers hope around the world.
