KA LĀ HIKI OLA:
The dawning of a new day. Optimism. The value of hope and promise.

Dear Friend,

In the spirit of ka la hiki ola, MARE is heading to Hawai’i later this year to support their Sustainable Hawai’i Initiative. This statewide collaborative includes a bold goal to effectively manage 30% of their nearshore waters by 2030. The UN is partnering with Hawai’i, finding alignment with their own Sustainable Development Goals. Success in Hawai’i offers hope around the world. Hawai’i’s plan addresses concerns that other Island nations face and may serve as a road map for intervention and recovery.

Aloha Challenge 4

Intelligent ocean management is a proven strategy to promote resilience and sustainability in our deep sea ecosystems. With so little ocean explored, we need to look further, deeper, and more intently to bring accurate information to develop effective solutions. This is where MARE comes in, because when you can see a problem, you can solve a problem.

MARE partners for intelligent ocean management. In Hawai’i, we will explore and collect data in their most biodiverse regions, and use this information to help partners protect and understand how marine life is reacting and adapting to a warming, acidifying environment. Our BATFish is the right tool for this job, with the ability to go beyond SCUBA diver depth.

Aloha Challenge 5

We are almost there. You can make a difference!
To achieve a successful expedition we need to raise $75,000 more.

Donate today to help bring MARE’s unique technology and processes to support the Sustainable Hawai’i Initiative. We are partnering with Hawai’i’s Division of Aquatic Resources to ensure our data is actionable and integrated into their long term management plans.

**Your gift today will be doubled with a matching donation by the
Peter J Davis Family Foundation of Marin Community Foundation**

New Species

New Species 7

Dear Friend,

Last year, MARE embarked on our most ambitious expedition schedule to date, traversing over 1,000 miles of the West Coast. This resulted in the collection and documentation of corals and built greater understanding about our deep-sea ecosystems.

We are very excited and proud to share that we were also part of the discovery of a new species of coral! Named Chromoplexaura cordellbankensis in honor of Cordell Bank, this yellow octoral coral species was also found in other areas along the coast.

“Deep-sea exploration and surveys provide crucial biodiversity data to support the protection of fragile underwater rocky habitat.” (NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries)

The time is NOW to invest in exploration and discovery!

This is just one example of how much more we need to learn about our deep-sea, how critical exploration continues to be. Discoveries like this are our raison d’etre – and they simply could not happen without the generosity of individuals like you. Please consider contributing to deep sea science and understanding.

Donate to MARE today to invest in ocean exploration, discovery, and protection.

To watch MARE’s work – and your funding support – in action, check out video from one of our expeditions and see what we discovered!

Sincerely,

2018 Coral Donor Thank You

2018 Coral Donor Thank You 12

Dear Friend,

Last year you generously supported our Deep Sea Coral Program, which resulted in identification of a new species of coral!

Meet Chromoplexaura cordellbankensis! With our expedition partners California Academy of Sciences and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, this new species was discovered around Cordell Bank and has been seen around Monterey Bay and Channel Island national marine sanctuaries.

Our three expeditions in 2018 to locate deep-sea corals included: Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Farallon Islands, and ~1,000 miles from Oregon down to Southern California. Because of you, we visited and documented never before seen areas of the deep ocean, including the rough, remote portion of western San Miguel Island. The images and data collected last year built more understanding about deep-sea marine life and ecosystems and enabled us to map and protect sensitive deep-sea coral habitat.

In summary, MARE’s 2018 Coral Program included:

31 sites in Marine Sanctuaries along the West Coast explored
76 dives, some to depths of 500 meters
120 samples to advance scientific understanding
To watch MARE’s deep sea science – and your funding support – in action, check out video from the expedition and see what we discovered!

Thank you for being a deep-sea coral supporter!
