GULF OF MEXICO – A 2022

MARE provided data management support during a 10-day research expedition with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) aboard R/V Point Sur from June 1st to the 10th 2022. The goal of the expedition was to collect samples in order to understand the genetic distribution of corals across the Gulf of Mexico and to bring home live samples to be propagated in the lab. A total of 350 samples were collected during 23 dives. In addition, 52 transects were surveyed using UNCW’s ROV MOHAWK, which will be post-processed for habitats, fish, and invertebrates by MARE biologists.

Coral samples collected during this expedition by the UNCW’s ROV MOHAWK for propagation in the lab in order to study their genetics.
